Maquette City - Final Project 3D Sketching

During my previous project I created organic vessels. (Photos of vessels coming soon). For my final project I wanted to just explore a load of different materials and joining techniques. I also wanted to continue making vessels and so, My tutor suggested I design a collection of vessels which have a mechanical/ industrial feel, in contrast to my last project.

I struggled to make a start with this project, usually I design everything in my sketchbook and then just make it, but as I was really struggling with ideas and just generally conveying them. I decided to make maquettes. I spent the weekend just making them while watching tv.

By sunday night, I had about 25 maquettes, by tuesday I had about 36, some of them good, others not so good. Which is why not all of them were photographed.

I plan to make some of these out of aluminium, copper, gilding metal, perspex and use wood for the bases. To give them the mechanical/ industrial look I’m going to add screws, nuts, rivets, washers, etc. As well as enamel and heat patinas.

I’ll post photos of the finished collection.

This ring was made to fit two fingers so you had more support when using it.

gremlinowl:

Michelle Startzman

My work is a reflection of myself and the relationships that I have formed throughout my life. I am interested in the constant current of people who come in and out of our lives, and the way that we build relationships through perception and understanding. First impressions are often wrong, and only by looking beyond layers, will a person’s true identity be revealed.

I construct forms that represent an unknown identity. With the use of photographs, layering and microscopic inspired forms, my work considers the complexity of relationships and the way that people relate to one another. The microscopic perspective encourages the viewer to take a close analytical look, while the portrait revealed underneath prompts interest in the unknown.

The jewelry I create is intended to be worn on the body, which implies an intimate experience in which the wearer becomes physically and symbolically close to the identity represented in the piece. The sculptural forms are more reserved, keeping the identity separate from the viewer, yet there is a level of intimacy in the way that the viewer has to peer in closely to reveal what is inside. The camera lenses function as viewfinders that also magnify the imagery, further distorting the portrait underneath.

The pieces are built with structural integrity, but with fragile materials such as glass that can easily be shattered if mistreated, much in the way that relationships can be damaged if not cared for. The aim of my work is to bring insight to the complexity of human relationships and the examination that is necessary to look beyond the surface to truly understand someone.

Thrown Vessels

Started my monday ceramics workshop today. I haven’t thrown anything in 2 years, and even then it was only a taster class one afternoon. So I consider these to be decent attempts.

I threw the pot in the bottom left corner first, then the bowl in the top left and lastly the bowl in the bottom right.

I still need a lot of practice,  but I have definitely improved compared to 2 years ago, and I…

Sketchbook Pages

Thought I’d share some more sketchbook pages from my vessels project. I think it’s safe to say I explored a lot of shapes. I had 11 sides of A4, just full of shapes.

The page below shows some of the textures, patterns and marks I wanted to apply to the vessels.

I love seeing how people use their sketchbooks and the difference in the way they work. What does your sketchbook look like?

Progress shot. I’ve been going over this vessel with a cut 4 file for the past 2 hours, so far, I’ve only completed one side and a quarter of the underside.

This is the ‘Fork Ring’ I finished just after New Year.

The idea was based on how cutlery was considered a fashion statement and sign of wealth between the 1600’s - 1800’s, before the introduction of mass produced stainless steel and plastic cutlery, when it was silver plated or made from solid silver. People would have their own set of cutlery that they would take everywhere with them. As cutlery was not common during this period. The more extravagant the cutlery, the wealthy you were.

This ring was based on what was referred to as ‘Finger Food’. The only food that was not consumed using utensils. It was a combination of functional cutlery and statement jewellery.

Photos of the spoon ring and knife I made will be posted later.

SILVER!!

I just bought some sterling silver sheet and wire! It was scary and exciting at the same time, since i’ve only ever worked with copper and gilding metal. Hopefully I won’t ruin any of it!

Progress on my first raised bowl. This is what it looked like after the first planishing. It still needs to be centered, but that will done on the next planishing.

Sorry about the picture, the pencil doesn’t show up well
